“The World's Best … Coach”

Workshop with Jack Daniels, PhD

Exercise Physiologist & Running Coach

In the mid-1990's, Runner's World Magazine named Jack Daniels as “The World's Best Running Coach”. It would be hard to disagree when you consider his pedigree and longevity. He coached legendary US mile world record holder Jim Ryun in the 1960's, Joan Benoit Samuels to the 1984 Olympic marathon Gold Medal and currently coaches 2nd ranked US women's marathon runner Magdelena Lewy Boulet.

The New Zealand Academy of Sport South Island welcomes you to a seminar by one of the world's leading endurance sport coaches. While Jack is a running coach, the principles he espouses should be applicable to all physiology based sports. He will cover his philosophy of training ( "You should try and get the maximum benefit out of training with the least amount of discomfort possible") and share his multi-decade experiences as a world class coach.

Jack is a former Professor of Physical Education and running coach at the State University of

New York at Cortland who gained a PhD in Exercise Physiology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has worked at various Universities in the US but is probably best known for the physiological work he did with shoe company Nike and the Athletics West running team in Oregon in the 1980s. He has recently worked at University of Northern Arizona 's Centre for High Altitude Training in Flagstaff , Arizona before it was closed in late 2008.

Jack has written several books but his best known is Daniels Running Formula , which outlines training programmes for runners from 800m to the marathon. (Runner's World must like him because they called this the Best Training Book !) He will expand on his work in the book on using the different training intensities to gain best performance from athletes.

Jack is a two time Olympic medallist having won the silver medal in 1956 in Melbourne and bronze medal in 1960 in Rome in the Modern Pentathlon. Ironically it was his interest in his weakest event, running, that led to his future career.
